Know your coins.

Most coins we purchase are based on their gold content as measured by weight, not carat. For example, one ounce American Gold Eagle coins are 22K (.9167 gold with the remainder of the coin a combination of silver and copper). The one ounce American Gold Eagle coin, however, contains one ounce of pure gold. The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins are 24K gold and contain gold in the amounts stamped on them from 1/20, 1/10, 1/4, 1/2 and one ounce.

For soveriegn gold bullion coins like American Gold Eagles and Canadian Maple Leaf coins, we generally pay something close to the spot price of gold. You can get an indication of the current price of gold by checking it in the side bar to this blog post.

Some gold coins may carry with them numismatic value, for which we may be willing to pay a premium over the spot price of the coins. You may be able to get a higher price for such coins on ebay – or at least list them for a higher price. One issue with selling coins on ebay is that you may never get the price you wish or you may have to wait weeks or months to find a buyer.
